What is Credit Recovery?
Credit recovery gives students who have failed a course a second chance to earn that credit and stay on track for graduation. Instead of repeating an entire year or squeezing into an already full schedule, students retake just the course they need, online and at their own pace.
Accelerate Online Academy’s credit recovery courses cover the same standards as the original course, so students genuinely master the material they struggled with the first time. When the course is complete, we send an official transcript to the student’s school so the credit can be applied toward graduation.
One Important Distinction
Credit recovery is different from grade enhancement.
Credit recovery courses are for students who failed a course and need to recover the credit.
If a student passed but wants a better grade, that typically requires the traditional, non-credit-recovery version of the course.
Not sure which one applies? Our enrollment team can help you figure it out.
How Online Credit Recovery Works

Check with your school counselor
We always recommend getting your counselor’s approval before enrolling. Not all schools accept credit recovery credits, and your counselor can confirm exactly which course you need.

Enroll any time of year
There’s no waiting for a new semester. Students can start a credit recovery course any day of the year, whether that’s mid-October or the first week of summer.

Work at your own pace, with real teacher support
Courses are fully online with 24/7 access to the learning platform. Students get one-on-one time with highly qualified teachers, optional weekly group sessions, and tech support when they need it.

Complete the course and send your transcript
Once the course is finished, request an official transcript and we’ll send it to your school so the recovered credit can be applied.
Adaptive credit recovery courses
Many of our credit recovery courses offer an “adaptive” option. Adaptive courses start with a pre-test that lets students test out of sections they’ve already mastered, so they only spend time on the material they actually struggled with.
The content is identical to the standard credit recovery course. The only difference is that adaptive students can skip what they already know, which often means finishing faster. If a course has an adaptive option, you’ll see it listed in the course catalog.

How Long Does Credit Recovery Take?
Because our courses are self-paced, the timeline is largely up to the student. A motivated student working daily can move through a semester course quickly, while a student balancing other classes can spread the work out over a longer stretch. Adaptive courses can shorten the timeline further by letting students skip material they’ve already mastered.
Since enrollment is open year-round, students can also use school breaks and summer to recover credits without disrupting their regular schedule.

Accredited Courses Your School Can Trust
Accelerate Online Academy is accredited by Cognia (formerly AdvancED), and many of our high school courses are University of California A-G approved. We are also approved as an online provider of NCAA core courses, which matters for student athletes recovering credits while protecting their eligibility.
That said, every school district handles outside credits differently. Before enrolling, ask your school counselor to confirm that they’ll accept an online credit recovery credit from Accelerate Online Academy. It’s a five-minute conversation that protects your investment, and our enrollment team is happy to speak with your counselor directly if that helps.

Credit Recovery FAQs
We have answers! If you still have questions or need anything, we’re here to help.
What is credit recovery in high school?
Credit recovery is a way for students who failed a course to retake it and earn the credit they need for graduation. Instead of repeating the full year, students complete an online version of just the course they failed, then transfer the credit back to their school.
What are adaptive credit recovery courses?
Adaptive courses begin with a pre-test that identifies what the student already knows. Students then skip those sections and focus only on the material they haven’t mastered. The content is the same as the standard course, but adaptive students often finish faster.
Do schools accept online credit recovery credits?
Most do, but policies vary by district. Accelerate Online Academy is accredited by Cognia, which is why schools across the country accept our credits. We still recommend confirming with your school counselor before enrolling, and our team can talk with your counselor directly if you’d like.
Can I do credit recovery over the summer?
Yes. Enrollment is open year-round, and summer is one of the most popular times to recover credits since students can focus on a single course without juggling a full schedule.
What’s the difference between credit recovery and grade enhancement?
Credit recovery is for students who failed a course and need the credit. Grade enhancement is for students who passed but want a better grade, which usually requires taking the traditional version of the course instead. If you’re not sure which you need, call us at 1-866-794-7147 .
When can I enroll?
Any time. There are no semester start dates or enrollment windows for credit recovery courses. Students can begin the same week they enroll.
