This Kindergarten Language Arts course will teach students to identify and write all letters, produce letter sounds and also frequently used phonograms. Students will also master weekly sight words and reading and comprehension strategies to grow as readers. All Common Core K LA standards are met in this course.
In the first semester of Kindergarten Language Arts, students build essential early literacy skills by exploring the alphabet through a series of engaging, letter-focused modules. Emphasis is placed on recognizing and forming letters, identifying letter sounds, and blending phonemes to begin decoding simple words. Students are introduced to high-frequency words and practice reading directionality, sentence structure, and rhyming. Through interactive lessons and decodable books, children learn to organize story events, make personal connections to texts, and use illustrations to support storytelling. This semester lays a strong foundation for reading and writing by nurturing phonemic awareness, fine motor development, and oral language skills in a fun, developmentally appropriate environment.
In the second semester of Kindergarten Language Arts, students continue building essential early literacy skills through engaging, letter-and phonics-focused modules. They explore the remaining letters of the alphabet, digraphs, and long vowel sounds. Emphasis is placed on recognizing and forming letters, identifying letter sounds, and blending phonemes to begin decoding simple words. Students continue to learn high-frequency words and practice reading directionality, sentence structure, and rhyming. Spelling instruction begins with a focus on common spelling patterns, such as CVC words. Through interactive lessons and decodable books, children learn to organize story events, make personal connections to texts, and use illustrations to support storytelling. Students are also introduced to informational text features and structures, including identifying the main idea and supporting details. Writing expectations increase as students begin learning to compose opinion, informational, narrative, and research-based pieces. This semester continues to lay a strong foundation for reading and writing by nurturing phonemic awareness, phonics, oral language, comprehension, and writing skills in a fun and developmentally appropriate environment.
